Festive window displays popped up quickly last month as Thanksgiving wound down and the holiday season began in earnest. We were so impressed that we decided to put together a photo feature of some of our favorite decorated shops in the Harrisburg area.
Thank you so much to our local shopkeepers for keeping this time merry despite the challenges we face. At TheBurg, we hope that this page serves as a reminder to patronize and support locally owned businesses, many of which are struggling this year. Please remember the essential role that local businesses play in our community, how much we need them to be here for us. Happy holidays!

Tiffany Williams launched an online home décor business, Swatty Creek Mill last year. And now Swatty Creek Mill has a place to call home in Hummelstown.
Swatty Creek Mill opened last month at 28 W. Main St.
The store sells a variety of items including seasonal home decor, soap, florals, potpourri, t-shirts, blankets, pillows, rugs, candles, snacks, gifts, apparel and some vintage items in the four-room facility.
Williams said that the new shop will allow her to have all of the of the store’s items centrally located and available for shipping nationally or the items can now be picked up in Hummelstown.
In the future, she hopes to host “do it Yourself” and “how to” classes at the store and she also hopes to have space for local vendors as well.
Previously, Williams was an assistant vice president with Members 1st Federal Credit Union. Last year she started Swatty Creek Mill by selling items through Etsy, Amazon and the company website. She also sold items from the store at a booth in the Palmyra area. And she has a booth at Olde Factory Antiques and Crafts in Hummelstown and she will continue to do so.
Swatty Creek Mill is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Williams said that according to information that she obtained from the Hummelstown Historical Society the property at 28 W. Main St. can be traced back to 1795, and it was previously home to Mr. Kilmer & Mr. Ruff’s Pharmacy (from 1905 to 1922), the Albert Imoden Store, Early’s Flower Shop, Tarman Book Store, the Hummelstown Historical Society and an antique store.

Snuggled next to the flower shop on West Main Street in Hummelstown, a new business is taking root in a 1700s former pharmacy and home. Swatty Creek Mill, 28 W. Main St., is celebrating its opening Saturday, Sept. 12, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 13, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Owner Tiffany Williams says that she has always had an interest and love for rustic decor and after a number of years working in corporate banking, decided to expand that interest and love and share it with the community.
“I had financial knowledge and set out to build a brand that is not only a shop, but a shopping experience that is both convenient and honest with all of the ‘feels’ of a hometown shop,” Williams said.
“I started online with an Etsy site and built a website and had a presence on Amazon,” Williams said. “I also had a booth in Palmyra at The Black Swan and in Hummelstown at the Old Factory.”
There was also a small shop on her home property in Annville near the ruins of a fertilizer mill that inspired the name.
She soon determined that all this activity did pay off by getting the name out but the multiple locations got too choppy.
Founded in 2019, she says Swatty Creek Mill has already come a long way.
“When I began this adventure, I was inspired by our mill located on the Swatara Creek, with a listing of only a few vintage items that has now quickly flourished into an Online Shop (swattycreekmill.com) and now a Hummelstown storefront to call home.
“I still have my booth at the Old Factory because it’s Hummelstown,” she said.
“Doing this has been the scariest thing I have ever done,” she said, smiling behind her mask. “But it has been the most exciting.”
What will you find when you walk inside or go online?
“Swatty Creek Mill is a small-town shop,…dedicated to providing you with a warm and inviting, hometown-feel shopping experience whether in person or online. We offer a blend of new, vintage and antique home décor,” she said.
In the front room, the original pharmacy, you will see an array of seasonal items with an accent on fall decorating. Through the doorway to what would have been the living quarters for the pharmacist and family are an array of candles, soaps, and lotions, along with vintage kitchen items like pie tins, white crockery dishes and hand towels. The next two rooms display an array of florals, potpourri and textiles, including fun T-shirts, blankets, pillows and rugs, old and new.
Throughout are small pieces of furniture both antique and vintage from local vendors who display their finds and works with Williams.
“If you are looking for something specific, let me know,” she said. “I am continually going to auctions and will keep an eye out.”
She said there are collectors for everything like the person looking for vintage noisemakers.
Williams found her some.
“Mark your calendars and come help us celebrate Sept. 12 and 13,” she said. “There will be lots of fall decor to get you going and we can’t forget … GIVEAWAYS. Stop in to say hello and enter for our Giveaway Event. Prizes range from products to gift cards.”
Regular hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sunday, 11a.m.-5 p.m.
